History of the Club
The Bradford on Avon Social and Snooker Club as it exists today was formed in 1921.
The first mention of the club’s building goes back to 1611, following which it was known as the Maidenhead coaching inn, a role it fulfilled for a further 200 years.
What is now the snooker room was believed to be the oldest Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Wiltshire, dating back to the 1750s. The landlord of the Cross Keys in Frome Road was a friend of the Preacher, John Wesley, founder of the Methodists and both John and Charles Wesley often stayed and preached here.
In 1818 a new Methodist Chapel was constructed in Coppice Hill resulting in the Club building becoming a draper and printing works.
By 1903 it was a Conservative Club, though political apathy among its members led toit becoming what we have today.
